Yesterday I wrote the post about 6 obsessions for extreme achievement and I have gotten a lot of messages from people who read it about how much it helped them. Today I want to share a practise I just discovered and I have just done to help prepare for a new year 2014.
There are a lot of things you can do to prepare for a new year. I have 3 I want to recommend.
#1. Do a written reflection + analysis of each month of 2013 to note wins, lessons and improvements. Pretty amazing how powerful this exercise is (you’ll note that you were more successful than you think which builds momentum to start 2014 strong). I find that setting aside 3 hours on the last day of every month to review the goals of the month, and plan for the next month, something I call ‘Meeting with the Boss’ really helps a lot in keeping you focused on the goal.
#2. Set your “Big 5” goals for 2014 as well as your Top 5 goals for Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4. Tons of research confirming that goal-setting increases your physical ability to see opportunities, heightens focus and boosts motivation (via the release of dopamine in your brain).
#3. Then create your execution plan, month by month, with key milestones and rewards for winning. This gives you a decision-matrix to say a huge NO to all the distractions that get you off the activities that will ensure 2014 is your best year to date…
The most important thing is not to just read this and move on but to actually do the exercise.
