Day #370:Stop Waiting to Get Picked.

“The opportunity of a lifetime is to pick yourself. Quit waiting to get picked; quit waiting for someone to give you permission; quit waiting for someone to say you are officially qualified and pick yourself. It doesn’t mean you have to be an entrepreneur or a freelancer, but it does mean you stand up and say, “I have something to say. I know how to do something. I’m doing it.”- Seth Godin

Since I returned  to work in Nigeria I have been working in the HR department as Head of recruitment for Nigeria’s biggest e-commerce company- Jumia. And everyday I receive thousands of resumes from people looking for a job. People who are waiting for a call or email from us saying, ‘Hey your resume looks good, come interview with us’ and if they are successful at an interview we offer them something in our own terms. How much we think they are worth.

The interesting thing is a lot of these people are really intelligent people who can do anything they want if they want to. However, they have to wait for us to pick them to show us what they can do. They have to wait to get picked. And I know a lot of them, very smart people who never get picked. Makes me wonder how many talented people are wasting their time waiting for people like us to pick them and say ‘Hey you are really smart, come and work for us’.

Don’t get me wrong, I know I sound like a hypocrite. After all, I also got picked to do the job.

So what if we never have to wait to get picked? What if you never have to wait for the approval of that record label saying, ‘your music sounds nice, we might be able to promote you’, or those book publishers saying ‘we will like to publish your work’ or the HR department calling you saying: ‘we like your resume, come and work with us’.

The truth is, the world we live in now is making that possible by the day. If you find a way to record your music and it’s good, you can put it on youtube and share within your circle of friends who then share with their own friends and who knows, you just might go somewhere from there. You could self-publish on Amazon kindle and reach your audience without the help of a publisher. And of course rather than wait for the call from HR, you could do you own stuff. Get your own clients, make your own money.

I know it’s easier said than done. But we really have to stop waiting to get picked.
