Every year, advertisers try to get us emotional by telling a story we connect to, all in a bid to get us to buy something. This year’s Christmas ad by John Lewis, a chain of upmarket department stores operating throughout Great Britain tells the story of a little boy,Sam and his best friend,Monty the Penguin.
This is a tale of friendship,love and giving someone a gift they have been dreaming of this Christmas.
Everything about it is wonderful—the premise, the storytelling, the CGI, the music (John Lennon’s “Real Love,” as sung by Tom Odell). But it’s the quiet reveal at the end that achieves something actually magical—it makes you realize you’ve just seen the world through the eyes of a child.
That’s remarkable for any ad. For a Christmas ad, it’s perfect.
