The remaining pages of your life, career and circumstances are yet to be written, and chances are that if you don’t take charge and write the script yourself, others will do it for you.
Their intentions for your life may be noble, but the outcome won’t be as satisfying unless you take responsibility for your future.
Your parents, teachers, bosses, spouses, HR people, etc all have an idea of who you should be and what dreams you should pursue. ‘You should apply to the school you can get it into, don’t aim too high, cos if you miss and you are disappointed, we can’t watch you suffer, so,’ be realistic’, be reasonable so you dont get hurt’.
No one else can read your dreams.
No one else can maximise your talent.
No one else can tick off your bucket list.
And your life goals and aspirations can’t be achieved while you’re spending all of your energy on someone else’s. If you don’t work on your dreams, someone else will hire you to work on theirs.Simple.
Stopped waiting to get picked and stop waiting for permission. You already have permission.
Seth Godin puts it perfectly:
If you’re hoping that the HR people you sent your resume to are about to pick you, it’s going to be a long wait. Once you understand that there are problems just waiting to be solved, once you realize that you have all the tools and all the permission you need, then opportunities to contribute abound.
No one is going to pick you. Pick yourself.
