The saddest thing you will see around you everyday when you look around your office is hard working, disciplined, talented people who spend years upon years building someone else’s body of work.
There is a popular saying that: If you don’t build your dream someone will hire you to help build theirs. This rings true for everyone even if you think you don’t have what it takes to be an entrepreneur. This is not just about starting your own business, it about refusing the easy option of trudging along aimlessly along the path of least resistance. Choosing the comfortable life/job that pays well instead of work that gives our lives meaning.
Why do we do this? Because we never take the time to ask what really matters to us, and apply the discipline to infuse it into our daily work.
We refuse to make bold decisions, and instead follow the objectives, whims, and priorities of everyone around us: Parents, teachers, friends, spouses, society, etc. We hop from opportunity to opportunity without a sense of a through-line, and we meander our way to a nice, comfortable, semi-predictable existence. We run away from pain rather than toward meaning and value. And… after many years… we look back and we realize that we have sold our deeper passions and desires for life and work in exchange for a little bit of temporary stability.
